“Terror gripped my soul when I felt the strength of her fingers wrapped tightly around my throat. My cries went unheard, or at the very least weren’t unacknowledged and I realized no one was coming to stop her. I was scared and thought I was going to die.”

But I didn’t die. In fact, I learned to live. And you can too. There is life after abuse. I am living proof of it.

White Picket Monsters is my personal story of child abuse and how I learned to use my experiences as an impetus to help others. It’s a story of manipulation, sexual exploitation, and extreme mental and physical violence, but it’s also a story of survival, hope, and perseverance. As survivors of child abuse, we did nothing wrong. Children can not accept responsibility for an adult’s behaviour. I hope that by reading this book, other survivors can find strength to speak out and share their own stories.

Bev’s life demonstrates that there is hope at the end of a tragedy and in writing this book she will help many others. More work needs to be done with the government departments responsible for child protection, as well as foster care. Bev’s suggestions should be used nationwide and even taught to future social workers.

Stop blaming yourself. This is not your fault.
For many years I was angry at myself for not doing more to end the abuse. I felt shame for what had happened, and I blamed myself for the actions of my abusers. I held on to the secret because that’s what I was told to do, and I didn’t know any better. As a child, I could not identify the manipulation or understand the depth of the violation that my child-size body was being subjected to.

9 out of 10 victims of child abuse DO NOT report the abuse. Like in my case, they carry it with them for many years, often not realizing the impact of the trauma until later in life. I’m here to tell you it’s never too late to find the courage to live again. I learned that to really start the healing process, it’s important to break the silence. There is so much shame surrounding sexual abuse. It’s not part of the public dialogue. That must change so people feel safe to come forward and report these horrific crimes.

To community leaders, government officials, caregivers, and all others in the community: We all have a role to play in ending child abuse. Please don’t ever turn a blind eye on a child – you may be the only chance they have. White Picket Monsters is the story of a little girl who fell between the cracks of the child welfare system. There were so many red flags, yet no one intervened. We need to do better for the children of tomorrow. If we are going to find solutions, we need to understand how children are affected by abuse. I hope that by reading White Picket Monsters you gain a different perspective and are encouraged to take action to make the world safer for children everywhere.

About the Author

I’m an award-winning advocate, bestselling author, former fashion model and clothing designer, entrepreneur, wife, and mom. As a child, my father sexually abused me for more than a decade and instead of protecting me, my mother brutally beat me. Despite the circumstances, I was determined to persevere. The trauma of being abused never goes away, I’ve learned to cope and live a healthy and productive life. You can too.
Bev Moore Davis bares her soul and recounts the horrors of a disturbing childhood. The trauma described may be difficult to read but these stories need to be told. When we let stories of abuse remain hidden in the shadows of our hearts and minds, they continue to quietly fester while savagely eating away at society. Bev’s story details the remarkable transformation of a teen runaway to a business owner, a child protection advocate, and the driving force behind the Miles for Smiles Foundation. Her story is a testament to her strength of character and will leave you inspired.

Amazing book. So powerful

Unbelievable story of a terrible beginning turned into a strong and resilient individual. As the yearning for a parents love overtakes everything time and time again only to be beaten away, the writer seems to gain wisdom and strength in the knowledge that the cycle of abuse can end there. Any future can be changed by mindful acts of love and care. The messages carried in this biographical novel can be used by any age to show the damage can be done but it doesn’t have to become you.

A Message of Hope

I read this book in one sitting. This is a must read for survivors of child sexual and physical abuse, as it is a story of triumph over adversity. Bev tells her story in explicit and heart breaking detail. She is living proof that anyone can outshine the darkness that is cast upon them through childhood trauma. Her message of hope to all survivors is “We can take our lives back.” Bev certainly has done that and by her tremendous courage in telling her story, she is championing the rights of children everywhere whose voices have yet to be heard. Bravo brave lady.

An emotionally tough but important read

I rarely give a book 5 stars, but the courage and determination of the author to put her life on display for others is more than remarkable. I could not help but feel and visualize her pain. It was very frustrating to read about her brutal childhood; but my job was easy. In the end she has been able to persuade the powers to be to affect change in the system and help shine a light on child abuse. Thanks Bev.
